The ability to control infectious disease cannot be overstated.
Nor can the role of cleaning staff and building service workers in preventing the spread of virus and infectious diseases.
The transmission of disease has been a major subject of research and concern in the medical industry for more than 100 years. Today, with the increase in world travel and the spread of new bacteria and viruses that were unheard of just a few years ago, it has become a foremost concern in all types of facilities
including offices, schools, factories, and homes.
Infections and bacteria are transferred in a variety of ways. The major methods are:
Direct Contact: One person touches another, and germs or bacteria are passed via breaks in the skin or open pores.
Indirect Contact: One person touches an inanimate object that has been contaminated by another person, passing on germs and bacteria.
Droplet and Airborne Spread: Upper respiratory infections are transferred from one person to another through close contact and inhalation. SARS is believed to be spread this way, but that doesn’t diminish the need to disinfect surfaces and practice good hygiene to control the virus and other diseases.

Cross- contamination occurs when tools are used in contradictory operations; for example, using the same cloth or mop cleaning a toilet facility to clean a kitchen area, bench tops ,floors etc will contaminate the food processing performed in that kitchen. Cleaning with a color-coded system can help keep germs from spreading by ensuring tools used in restrooms aren’t also used in office spaces and public areas. Use a specific colour coded mop specifically for toilet floors and another colour coded mop of a different colour for other parts of the building. This applies to all items used eg a specific set of cloths and scourers for toilets and a separate set for other areas. Keep a cleaners bucket clearly labeled with the specific toilet cleaning items separate from the cleaners bucket designated for other areas.

Disinfecting with a pre-moistened towel or microfiber cloth with disinfectant can reduce up to 99.99 percent of the germs on each item. Using a cleaner without disinfectant merely spreads the germs around. These tasks included disinfecting phones, light switches, door knobs, handrails, desk tops, exercise equipment in the executive gym, break room and conference areas.

After cleaning restrooms, cleaners should wash their hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer; wearing gloves is another good safety precaution using different gloves for toilets and other areas.
